Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
