The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be crafting a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
